A little room to think

One clearer reading question.

Before interpreting a total, identify what earns a place in the count. A person, an entry, and an occasion are different units. If the same contributor could appear more than once, counting entries would not establish how many distinct contributors were represented. That does not make the tally wrong; it changes what the tally answers. Rewrite the reported total in words that name its unit. If your question concerns a different unit, ask for the connection between them instead of assuming that the numbers can be used interchangeably.

Questions to keep nearby

  1. What exactly earns a separate place in the total being reported?
  2. Could the same contributor account for several entries in this count?
  3. What information would connect the reported unit to the unit my question needs?
