A little room to think

One clearer reading question.

Start by finishing the phrase “compared with” before accepting a claim that something is better. The alternative sets the question. A comparison could be carefully made yet use a reference that does not fit what you wanted to learn. Write down the outcome being compared and the reason that particular alternative is relevant. Then keep the conclusion attached to that choice. Showing an advantage against one reference would not, by itself, establish an advantage against every possible reference. The clearer next step is to ask which comparison would address your actual question.

Questions to keep nearby

  1. What makes this particular alternative a useful reference for the question being asked?
  2. Would a different comparison address my question more directly than this one?
  3. Does the conclusion stay within the comparison that was actually made?
